Your privacy on this website

Last updated 27 September 2026

This notice explains what personal data this website processes and why. “We” means the operators of this website. There are no accounts, sign-up forms or newsletters here: the only place you can type anything is the Ask Mariama chat.

Visiting the site

The website runs on a server we rent from Hetzner in Germany. Everything on the page, fonts and images included, is loaded from this website itself, not from other companies.

Traffic to the site passes through Cloudflare, which protects it against attacks and speeds it up. To do that, Cloudflare processes your IP address and the technical details of each request. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie if it has to check whether a visitor is a bot. The website itself sets no cookies.

Visitor statistics

We count visits with Umami, an open-source analytics tool that we run ourselves on the same server in Germany. The data stays on that server and is not shared with or sold to anyone.

  • What is recorded: the pages you view, the site you came from, your browser, device type, operating system, screen size, language and country, how fast pages load, and clicks on certain buttons and links (for example a press source or the language switch). The text you type is never part of this.
  • No cookies are used.
  • Your IP address is not stored. It is used only to work out your country and, through a one-way hash with a salt that changes periodically, to count unique visitors.
  • If your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, Umami records nothing at all, including the recordings described below.

Session recordings and heatmaps

To see where the site is unclear or broken, we record how visitors use the pages: clicks, scrolling, mouse movements and how the page is built up on screen. From this we also make heatmaps, which show where people click and how far they scroll.

  • Anything you type into a field is masked in your browser before the recording is sent, so recordings never contain it.
  • The Ask Mariama conversation is left out of recordings entirely.
  • A recording lasts at most 10 minutes and is deleted after 30 days.
  • Recordings are stored with the statistics above, on our own server in Germany.

Ask Mariama

Ask Mariama answers questions with AI. When you send a question, the conversation so far is sent from our server to Google’s Gemini API, which generates the reply. Google processes it under its Gemini API terms.

We also keep a log of each conversation (your questions, the replies and the time) on our server, so we can check what the assistant told people; a short excerpt of each question also appears in the server’s system log. Your IP address and other details about you are not stored with it. This log is not deleted automatically at the moment; ask us and we will delete your conversation.

Please do not type personal details, such as your name, phone number or email address, into the chat.

Links to other websites

This site links to press articles, official documents and social media posts. Once you follow such a link, the privacy policy of that website applies.

Your rights and how to reach us

You can ask us which personal data we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it, or to stop using it. Because the statistics and recordings contain no name, IP address or other identifier, we usually cannot find them for a specific person. You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority.

For questions or requests, contact the operators of this website through stiekema.dev, the studio that built the site.
